What makes Great Teaching?

Top 5 Tools for success from Public Education Multicultural Society  1. Blogging with other educators. This strategy was beneficial because I was able to see my peer's viewpoints and thoughts on important subjects that we covered. 2. Social Media. This was one of my favorite ways to analyze issues in the education world in an informal way. Doing this helped with connecting ideas to real-life instances and seeing that you are not the only one who feels a certain way about things being done in the education world. 3. Reading and Writing poetry to express ideas. I especially loved this tool when analyzing poetry in the modules. Being able to look at someone else's work and pull your own conclusions from the work they had produced and create another poem from it helped when critically thinking about what was said. 4. Do's and Don'ts  This wasn't one of my absolute favorites but it helped when analyzing text. Looking at the text and pulling things that I thought were d...

What does money have to do with it?

Image
What does money have to do with it?  Hello again, it has been a while since I posted a blog and this week's question had me ready to start writing! Abba said it best, "Money money money must be funny in a rich man's world" and that is an extremely fitting lyric for this topic! We all know that schools do not get enough funding for everything we wish to do for the children, but when you put it in the perspective of different school districts with different property tax incomes it becomes a lot scarier. For some reason, I had never put two and two together but after listening to the podcast in this unit it really opened my eyes to the inequity that we face in our school systems regarding funding. There are students who are in low-income areas who receive even less funding than every other school district and that is an automatic red flag! If we are already thinking that all of our schools have low funding, imagine the schools that are in these areas. It is simply unf...

How Does Gender Affect the Teaching Profession?

How Gender Affects our views of the Teaching Profession This is a topic I have struggled with for a long time. When I told my parents I wanted to be a teacher, they seemed slightly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, they were very excited I had chosen a profession that would help so many children and families, they had always wanted me to be a doctor or a businesswoman. What I wondered was why I was getting such a weird reaction from people when I told them I wanted to be a teacher. I have heard all of my life that teaching is a "married woman's job" and for a while, I would agree. Teachers do not get paid enough to sustain a family with just that salary alone, usually, we have to get a side job, or in most cases, have a partner who can help with the financial aspect of our lives. I didn't understand that this was rooted in a sexist belief that it was an "easy job" and to that, I now say I wish the people who say those things would try and do it for a d...

Whose stories are told?

Image
This has absolutely been my favorite module so far. The topic of one-sided history is one that seems to get addressed all of the time, but I hope it is being put into practice in our K-12 schools! I know that since I have gotten to Texas State, I have learned so much more about historical events that were covered in high school, and I just wish that this same level of care concerning these topics was implemented in high school because not everyone has the resources and opportunities to be able to go to college. That being said let's get into the topic of this discussion; Whose stories are being told? From the reading "Segregated by Experience" I learned so much about the systems that were put in place and are  still being used in our schools today. One thing that stood out to me from this reading was the concept of movement for children of color. All of the time in classrooms you will hear "put a bubble in your mouth" "stay in your seat" or "do...

Talking about issues that matter

Image
Golden lines:  " I try to find a place of mutual understanding, to give others the benefit of the doubt, and to attempt to see an experience from the other’s perspective". - Dr. Steven Becton "...they have these ideas and they have these fresh perspectives, but what they don't necessarily have is the academic language and vocabulary that goes with it". - Jenna Forton In this blog post, I will be discussing both of the golden lines above. While thinking about this topic, I even find myself feeling scared of talking about the things that matter. For some reason in our classrooms and even in our personal lives, we have made it extra difficult to talk about controversial topics. Naturally, people have very different opinions, and when someone has an opinion about something they are not prone to changing their minds or seeing the way that other people are thinking. The first quote listed above really stuck out to me for multiple reasons. I really liked how Dr. Becto...

What is the purpose of public schools?

Image
While reading this article, I found myself getting frustrated. While the answer to this question seems obvious, it is not as simple as it seems. Of course, the main goal of public schools is to give knowledge to your students that will benefit them in their careers and in their lives, but it is much more complex than that. Teachers have to wear many hats for one job, and that is being a teacher, a caregiver, a social worker, and how the article puts it in this day and age, an epidemiologist. There are so many more things that we have to do for our students than just give them information to use in their lives, and as it seems from reading this article the support that we need is not given. So what do we do? Well in all honesty it is hard to see a clear path of how to provide everything that the child needs with a lack of support from agencies but here is what I do know, I know that when the student is in the classroom, as a teacher all I can do is make sure they are provid...

Introduction Blog

My Introduction for CI 3310: Priya Clark About me:  I am a Texas State Junior and I currently sub at a Montessori school! I love to play the guitar and go hiking when I get a chance. If anyone has any suggestions about where to hike in this area please let me know! My favorite teacher tik-tok page is @learningwithheidi and this page is awesome because she shares so many ideas! My favorite tik-tok she made was with flashbot, it's a fun and creative way for children to learn phonemic awareness! Why teach?: Teaching is not something that I have always wanted to do. When I was younger I always wanted to be a singer or a dancer, but as I started getting older I realized how much of an impact teachers can make on their students' lives, kind of similar to being a performer who impacts their audience. My dad had a job where we had to move every 2 to 3 years, and while I didn't know it at the time it greatly impacted my learning experience. While my parents did everything in their ...
